Original Gears of War Creator Endorses E-Day After E-Day Direct

Original Gears of War Creator Endorses E-Day After E-Day Direct

“So yeah, E-day looks great, amazing feature set, great tech improvements and, most importantly, looks like it has heart. On top of all sorts of insane violence and destruction.”

With those words, the original lead designer of the Gears of War trilogy, Cliff Bleszinski, gave his seal of approval to the upcoming prequel. Bleszinski, who is not affiliated with developer The Coalition or Xbox Game Studios, shared his live reactions on X during the June 2026 E-Day Direct. His real-time commentary tracked a shift from early skepticism to total endorsement as Microsoft showcased more of the upcoming shooter.

The broadcast was part of the broader Xbox Games Showcase 2026 schedule, which gave fans their deepest look yet at the prequel. Bleszinski started his viewing with a critical eye. Early in the stream, as gameplay footage showed Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago fighting off the subterranean horde, he posted, “Those Locust are dying mighty easy, just sayin’.”

That initial hesitation evaporated as the presentation continued and the scale of the combat expanded. The Coalition showed off more environmental destruction and tactical movement options, winning the former lead designer over. “Yes, there’s that sweet destruction I was hoping for,” Bleszinski posted after seeing more footage. “The longer glimpse of what The Coalition has been up to is exciting. Super low cover is a nice touch too.”

A Franchise Return to Roots

Bleszinski guided the franchise through its initial run at Epic Games, establishing the heavy, roadie-running cover mechanics that defined the Xbox 360 era. Microsoft acquired the Gears of War intellectual property from Epic Games in 2014 and formed The Coalition to steer the series. The studio subsequently developed and released Gears of War 4 in 2016 and Gears 5 in 2019.

Gears of War: E-Day represents a narrative pivot backward. The game is a prequel set on Emergence Day, 14 years before the events of the original 2006 title. It focuses on a younger Marcus Fenix during the initial hours of the Locust invasion, a setting that allows the developers to lean back into the darker, horror-influenced atmosphere of the early games.

The Coalition is building the title on Unreal Engine 5. It is targeting Xbox Series X|S and PC, and Microsoft has confirmed it will be available on Game Pass on its launch day. No release date has been announced by Microsoft or The Coalition.
