Bethesda Softworks has released the “Infestations” update for Fallout 76, introducing Season 25 alongside major balance shifts and public testing details for native current-generation consoles. The patch overhaul includes massive changes to environmental radiation resistance, new weapon mods, and the highly anticipated addition of C.A.M.P. pets. As reported by Playday, this update sets the stage for a summer of technical upgrades and fresh seasonal content.
Fallout 76 is an always-online multiplayer first-person action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks, originally released in 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Xbox Series X|S and PS5 Public Testing
Bethesda is launching public tests in June 2026 for native Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5/Pro versions of the game. Owners of the game can download these test builds directly from the Xbox and PlayStation Stores, with a full release planned for later this summer. The current-gen upgrades introduce several technical enhancements:
- Targeted 60 FPS across Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PS5 Pro.
- Improved draw distances and shadow quality.
- 4K resolution on compatible displays for Xbox Series X, Xbox One X, and PS5 Pro.
- Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support on compatible displays for Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS5, and PS5 Pro.
- PS5 and PS4 Pro will output at 1440p, while base previous-generation platforms remain locked at 1080p.
Jay’s Take: The inclusion of native PS5 Pro enhancements like 4K resolution and VRR shows Bethesda is actively optimizing for Sony’s high-end hardware mid-generation cycle.
Season 25: Appalachia Under Siege
Season 25 introduces new challenges and rewards themed around building a post-nuclear homestead. The headline addition is the Deathclaw C.A.M.P. Pet, allowing players to house one of the Wasteland’s most lethal predators. This pet is obtainable by purchasing either the Deathclaw Pet Upgrade Bundle or the Deathclaw Pet Deluxe Edition on the Xbox, PlayStation, or Steam stores. The bundle includes two idle furniture items, two pet cosmetics, and a unique C.A.M.P. sign.
Jay’s Take: Monetizing the highly requested C.A.M.P. pets through premium store bundles might rub some players the wrong way, but having a literal Deathclaw guarding your base is a massive aesthetic upgrade.
New Seasonal Fish
Starting June 23, 2026, the first Tuesday after the summer solstice, players can participate in a new seasonal fishing system. These summer fish will eventually be joined by autumn, winter, and spring variants as the seasons progress. These fish cannot be broken down into Fish Bits; instead, they serve as core ingredients for new seasonal food recipes. Players looking to start their fishing journey can find a starter note written by Captain Raymond at Fisherman’s Rest.
Jay’s Take: Adding seasonal fishing mechanics gives endgame players a peaceful, recipe-driven distraction from the usual grind of launching nukes and clearing events.
Radiation Resistance and Consumable Balance
Bethesda has completely overhauled how radiation resistance functions, making armor and consumables significantly more effective against environmental exposure. Reaching a threshold of 1,500 to 2,500 Radiation resistance now dramatically reduces incoming damage from heavy environmental sources, such as active Nuke Zones. This system update also scales up enemy radiation resistance, laying the groundwork for future updates that will reduce enemy radiation immunities and expand player-driven radiation builds. To balance this rework, several key consumables have been adjusted:
- Nuka-Orange: Radiation Exposure Resistance increased from +25 to +50.
- RadShield: Radiation Exposure Resistance doubled from +300 to +600, but it can no longer be repeatedly consumed to stack the effect.
- Glowing Blood Pack: Repeated consumption to stack the effect has been disabled.
- Irradiated Blood Pack: Repeated consumption to stack the effect has been disabled.
- Rad-X: Radiation Exposure Resistance decreased from +600 to +300.
- Rad-X: Diluted: Radiation Exposure Resistance halved from +250 to +125.
Jay’s Take: Cutting the raw numbers of Rad-X in half sounds like a nerf, but because the underlying math of Radiation Resistance has been buffed across the board, the developers note that these items will actually feel stronger in practice than they did before.
Weapons, Mods, and Perks
Several weapons have received balance adjustments and new mod pools, with a specific focus on expanding the utility of the Light Machine Gun. The Gutter has been updated with new Legendary Mods and effects, including Vampires, Inertial, Ghost’s, and Implicit Poison Damage. Existing versions of the weapon will gain these effects, though their current Legendary Mods will remain unchanged. Additionally, the V63-HELGA now features a built-in penetration effect that allows shots to pierce targets.
Other major weapon and perk changes include:
- Retribution: Now fully compatible with the Defender’s mod.
- Scattershot: Fixed an issue where the perk provided more limb damage than intended.
- Tormentor: Addressed a bug where the perk delivered excessive damage.
- Gamma Gun: Added flat energy damage alongside its standard radiation output.
- Light Machine Gun: The “Standard Muzzle” mod has been renamed to “No Muzzle.”
Additionally, several new Light Machine Gun mods have been added to the scrap-to-learn pool and regional quest rewards. Players can earn the Stub Barrel, Bruising Stock, and Stabilized Stock from Savage Divide quests, while Cranberry Bog quests can award the Long Barrel, Large Magazine, and Muzzle Brake.
Jay’s Take: Giving the Gamma Gun dual-type energy and radiation damage makes it a far more versatile option against PvE enemies who previously ignored pure radiation builds.
UI and Crafting Quality of Life
The crafting workbench has received two major usability upgrades. The confirmation user interface now automatically organizes crafted items and ingredients into clear groups, though individual components remain itemized. Furthermore, players can now select a “Don’t ask again” option on crafting confirmation prompts to speed up bulk production.
Jay’s Take: Eliminating repetitive confirmation prompts is a massive time-saver for players crafting hundreds of rounds of ammunition or cooking food in bulk.
Player Impact
The radiation resistance rework completely redefines how players will approach high-radiation end-game content like Nuke Zones. By capping the ability to stack RadShield and blood packs, Bethesda is pushing players toward dedicated Power Armor or high-tier radiation-resistant armor sets rather than relying on consumable spam. Players who previously relied on stacking multiple RadShields to survive Nuke Zones in regular armor will now need to pivot to a solid set of armor optimized with radiation-resistant legendary mods to hit the new 1,500 to 2,500 resistance sweet spot.
For heavy weapons users, the influx of new Light Machine Gun mods is a game-changer. The addition of the Large Magazine, Bruising Stock, and Stabilized Stock directly addresses the weapon’s historically high recoil and small capacity. This makes the Light Machine Gun a highly competitive alternative to the 50 Cal Machine Gun or Minigun, especially for players who regularly farm quests in the Cranberry Bog and Savage Divide to unlock these mods.
