Raiders of the North DLC Announced for Age of Empires IV

Xbox Game Studios announced the Raiders of the North DLC for Age of Empires IV, which will introduce the Vikings and the Scots as playable civilizations alongside new gameplay systems. The upcoming expansion was officially revealed in a post published on Steam, marking the next major content update for the historical strategy title. While the announcement confirms the thematic focus on the dominion of the North Sea, an official release date and pricing details have not yet been announced by the developers.

Age of Empires IV is a real-time strategy game developed by Relic Entertainment and World’s Edge, published by Xbox Game Studios for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2021. Relic Entertainment, who also developed the tactical RTS Company of Heroes 3, co-developed the base game of Age of Empires IV, which has maintained a dedicated player base through seasonal updates and major expansions.

When Does Raiders of the North Release?

Raiders of the North DLC Announced for Age of Empires IV

An official release date for Raiders of the North has not yet been announced by Xbox Game Studios or World’s Edge. The Steam announcement notes that the expansion is coming soon, suggesting that players can expect more details regarding a launch window, beta tests, or pre-order availability in the coming months. Historically, expansions for the franchise are revealed a few months before they go live, which could point to a late 2026 release window, though this remains speculation until official confirmation is provided.

What Civilizations Are in Raiders of the North?

The Raiders of the North DLC introduces two distinct factions, the Vikings and the Scots, both of which played pivotal roles in the medieval history of the North Sea region. The Vikings are expected to focus heavily on naval dominance, infantry raiding mechanics, and highly mobile transport options, mirroring their historical reputation as seafaring raiders. Meanwhile, the Scots are anticipated to bring unique defensive structures, claymore-wielding infantry, and specialized skirmish tactics to counter heavy cavalry. These additions will expand the total roster of civilizations in the game, providing players with fresh tactical matchups and unique campaign scenarios.

In addition to the two new factions, the DLC promises to explore new gameplay systems and an expanded Crucible. While the exact mechanics of the Crucible expansion remain under wraps, the focus on the North Sea suggests a potential rework or enhancement of naval combat, which has been a point of continuous balance adjustment since the game’s 2021 release. New systems could also include unique campaign mechanics, faction-specific progression trees, or localized environmental hazards that reflect the harsh northern climates.

The announcement of Raiders of the North comes at a time when the real-time strategy genre is seeing renewed interest from both legacy developers and indie studios. Supporting a major RTS title five years after its initial launch indicates a strong commitment from Xbox Game Studios to maintain its flagship strategy intellectual property. For the active player base, the introduction of two highly requested European factions will likely shift the competitive meta, offering new strategic counter-plays against existing civilizations like the English and the French.
